TIM’s Miniatures & Musings (No: 60)

Welcome to this weeks Miniatures & Musings!

This weeks figure is from a company called Lead Adventure who are based in Germany and sees a return to Steampunk.  Not a great deal to say.  A nicely cast figure duly painted and put on a basic base.

Well It Made Me Laugh …

A nun walks into the Mother Superior’s office and plunks down into a chair. She lets out a sigh, heavy with frustration.

“What troubles you, Sister?” asked the Mother Superior. “I thought this was the day you spent with your family.”

“It was,” sighed the Sister. “And I went to play golf with my brother. We try to play golf as often as we can. You know I was quite a talented golfer before I devoted my life to Christ.”

“I seem to recall that,” the Mother Superior agreed. “So I take it your day of recreation was not relaxing?”

“Far from it,” snorted the Sister. “In fact, I took the Lord’s name in vain today!”

“Goodness, Sister!” gasped the Mother Superior, astonished. “You must tell me all about it!”

“Well, we were on the fifth tee — and this hole is a monster, Mother — 540 yard par 5, with a nasty dogleg right and a hidden green … and I hit the drive of my life. The sweetest swing I’ve ever made. And it’s flying straight and true, right along the line I wanted … and it hits a bird in mid-flight!”

“Oh my!” commiserated the Mother Superior. “How unfortunate! But surely that didn’t make you blaspheme, Sister!”

“No, that wasn’t it,” admitted the Sister. “While I was still trying to fathom what had happened, this squirrel runs out of the woods, grabs my ball and runs off down the fairway!”

“Oh, that would have made me blaspheme!” sympathized the Mother Superior.

“But I didn’t, Mother!” sobbed the Sister. “And I was so proud of myself! And while I was pondering whether this was a sign from God, this hawk swoops out of the sky and grabs the squirrel and flies off, with my ball still clutched in his paws!”

“So that’s when you cursed,” said the Mother Superior with a knowing smile.

“Nope, that wasn’t it either,” cried the Sister, anguished, “because as the hawk started to fly out of sight, the squirrel started struggling, and the hawk dropped him right there on the green, and the ball popped out of his paws and rolled to about 18 inches from the cup!”

The Mother Superior sat back in her chair, folded her arms across her chest, fixed the Sister with a baleful stare and said …

“You missed the fucking putt, didn’t you?”

Interesting Site?

Grekwood Miniatures is another site I have never ordered from but I came across them when I was searching for some zombies, an idea for a diorama which has yet to materialise.  If it does then I shall look at what they have to offer more closely.  They appear to be a supplier rather than a manufacturer as I notice they also sell some Crooked Dice miniatures as well.

At Telford last year one of the diorama group winners used a water effect called Making Waves.  The result was excellent.  How much it was down to the skill of the modeller and how much it was down to this stuff I have no idea.

This week TIM has been listening to …

“Get Down Tonight” by KC and the Sunshine Band.  I didn’t ask to be a teen in the disco era but there was no avoiding it if you wanted to go out to a club in the mid 1970’s and meet with the opposite sex.  Every generation will claim they had the best music and I am no different.  For all the bad press the period gets it did have some of the best music ever.  I loved this track back then and I still do.

This week TIM has been watching…

“The Equalizer 2” starring Denzel Washington.  Thought I ought to watch this to show Black Lives Matter!   Never saw the first one but suspect it was the better of the two.  This was OK and that’s all I have to say on it.

  1. A golf joke – right up my alley!

The mini is great and your work on it is your usual level of superb. I loved zooming in on the shading you used on the jacket to make it grubby. When a mini looks good when its blown up to 3 or 4 x – its good – and the jacket is well-worn and shabby-looking.

Ah, KC and the Sunshine Band. Such a ’70’s staple to be sure. A few years back (2004 or 2005 I think) I was with Sanofi, and attended a managers’ meeting in Florida. The dress for these meetings was always “business casual” – until this one (and only this one). Apparently we were told to bring a suit, and I missed that in the meetings memo, and unhappily learned about it on the flight down to Florida. Afraid that I was about to commit a “career-limiting move”, I scrambled, caught a cab to a mall, and got a suit that fit OK. Now as I said normally, suits were never part of the needs for these meetings, but no one knew why we needed suits. We had a bus ride scheduled that we needed to wear them on – and that’s all we knew. On day 2 or 3, we got in a bus, destination unknown. We arrived at the Mar-a-Lago Club – the former Post-cereal tycoon’s mansion turned into a club for the ultra-wealthy – and owned by Donald Trump. Opulence to the nth degree. Unbelievable. To add to the experience, we were set up in a party location at the club, and the band was – KC and the Sunshine Band. We were maybe 300-400 people? Unbelievable. They played great and were as full of energy as 1975. To top it off, Mr. Trump worked the room on a walk through. I wish I could have gotten a handshake, but I saw him pretty close. Later that year we had another managers’ meeting in NYC at which Trump spoke to us. All I remember is that he made a nice speech about management, and a day later HR reps came to apologize because Trump had said (in a very appropriate and polite way) that the VP’s assistant was professional and attractive. The PC police had struck, and I’m sure no one really cared (least of all me).

Sorry for the long digression, stay safe and hope you join Dave Munro’s upcoming chat on August 8 (7th for me, midnight Friday for you).

    1. Glad you like the mini and the joke Mark. Great tale too. Not sure there are many people who can put KC and Trump together in an anecdote! 😊. Am aiming to sign up for Dave’s chat. Just need to make sure I’m still awake for a midnight start and that I can handle the technology!

  2. I missed this post mate sorry. Equaliser 1 was much, much better than the 2nd but I did enjoy the 2nd. I’m a fan of Denzel. Have you seen John Q? Probably his best in my opinion. I also liked him in Glory and Man On Fire. Book of Eli is awesome too. Great mini mate, I really like the colours you went for. ZOMBIES you say???? I picked up a load of awesome zombies and survivors from here https://www.studiominiatures.com/
Can’t wait to see the zombie diorama. Will it be a big gruesome one????

    1. I have watched the first one now, and yes it was much better, sequel syndrome I reckon. I do like Denzel, jusy not a fan of that particulalr film. Will check out John Q, not seen that one. Studio Mimiatures are very good and I have seen there zombies. Not sure about a zombie diorama, oddly I struggled with an idea I had so need to go back to the drawing board at some point.
